Amalgam Filling Removal

Dentist discusses protocol for the safe dental amalgam fillings removal in Greenville

If you are an adult with one or more fillings chances are you have a silver mercury filling (amalgam). Amalgam was once the standard material used for these fillings because it was thought to be strong and safe. Over the past few decades, amalgam has come into question because it contains mercury; a known toxin. As such, an increasing number of guests opt for mercury-free fillings. At Palmer Distinctive Dentistry, we utilize biocompatible composite resin fillings which are safe for our guests.

Composite is a combination of plastic and glass, making it a durable option for fillings. In addition to being mercury-free, these fillings are less invasive. When a cavity is being filled, the dentist removes the decayed portion of the tooth before placing the filling. Amalgam requires more removal of healthy tooth than composite. With composite fillings, more of the tooth structure remains intact allowing for more stability.

So, what about those amalgam fillings that were placed years ago?

People that have amalgam fillings may want to have it removed. Generally, if the tooth has no problems and the guest has no health issues, it is often best to leave the filling alone. For guests who need to have the amalgam removed, we offer the safe removal of these fillings.

During the removal procedure, we follow strict protocol. The safety measures taken include:

  • Proper protective gear including non-latex gloves
  • Use of water and high volume suction to remove amalgam particles quickly and efficiently
  • Use of a rubber dam to help contain the debris
  • Use of oxygen so the guest breathes clean air
  • Proper barrier to cover the skin and protect the guest’s face
  • Use of a saliva ejector to collect vapor

Once the amalgam filling is removed, it can be replaced with composite resin or porcelain restorations that will blend in seamlessly with the tooth. By following this protocol for the safe removal of silver mercury fillings (amalgams), we maintain the safety of both the guest and the staff performing the procedure.
