Dental Crowns and Bridges

Greenville dentist explains how dental bridges and crowns restore teeth

If you have chipped, broken, or lost a tooth, you understand the pain and embarrassment it may cause. Guests lose confidence in their smiles. Located in Greenville, SC, Dr. Palmer and the team at Palmer Distinctive Dentistry offer dental bridges and crowns to restore teeth functionally and aesthetically.

Crowns and bridges are dental restorations.

The purpose of dental restorations is to repair and restore the teeth. They improve the functionality of the bite, keep teeth from shifting, and allow for better brushing and flossing. Aesthetically, restorations give guests a natural-looking smile once again. Crowns and bridges are fixed devices that are adhered to natural teeth or dental implants. Unlike dentures, crowns and bridges cannot be removed.

Key differences in crowns and bridges

Although both are fixed dental devices, their actual form and function are different.

  • Crowns are caps that are placed over chipped or broken teeth or used to cover an implant. Crowns make a tooth look and function naturally again.
  • Bridges literally bridge a gap left from missing teeth. They use the existing teeth or dental implants as supports and generally uses a false tooth to fill the gap.
  • Whereas crowns are used to restore a single tooth, bridges can replace one or more teeth.

Tooth preservation and restoration

At Palmer Distinctive Dentistry, we strive to preserve as much of the natural tooth as possible. For crowns and bridges, the tooth must be prepared ahead of time to remove the damaged portion of the tooth or to prepare for placement of the restoration. We offer traditional crowns, CEREC crowns, and bridges. We utilize zirconia for fixed bridges and porcelain materials for crowns to ensure biocompatibility, durability, and aesthetic appeal. Our dentists will work with you to recommended the best restoration option for your situation.
