TMJ/Headache Therapy

The best headache therapy may come from your Greensville, SC dentist

Tension across the back of your neck and head, feeling your heartbeat in your temples and forehead, sinus pressure, or intense, throbbing pain behind the eyes, headaches may be felt in a variety of ways. Sometimes dizziness, sensitivity to sounds or light, and nausea will accompany the pain of a headache. Millions of people suffer from headaches. When they are chronic, these little problems become quite detrimental to quality of life, stealing precious moments.

Headaches, even chronic headaches, are often treated with over-the-counter pain relievers or anti-inflammatory medication. Some people obtain prescription medication after consulting their physician about headaches. Lucky ones find a practitioner who will help them identify triggers and stressors that instigate pain so that they may be avoided. Often, however, the underlying cause of headaches is never identified.

If you or a loved one experience frequent headaches, Dr. John Palmer may be able to help find and treat the cause. Studies are pointing to the relation between jaw positioning and headaches. The lower jaw, in large part, affects the entire face, head, and neck. Problems may occur when the temporomandibular joints, or TMJs, located at the back of the jaw, are placed under excessive stress due to poor jaw alignment.

Dr. Palmer has been helping guests from Greenville and surrounding SC areas experience a sharp decrease in headaches using non-invasive therapies that go beyond the standard oral appliance therapy. Oral appliance therapy is a safe and efficient treatment for headaches because the devices are tailored to guests’ oral structure to reduce the stress of grinding or clenching teeth.

Our treatment for headaches looks at the big picture. In addition to working with guests to identify bruxism (tooth grinding and clenching), Dr. Palmer will discuss potential nutritional or lifestyle triggers. We may incorporate low-level laser, physical therapy, micro-current massage, or ultrasound into a treatment plan as ways to reduce the stress on the joints of the jaw and, thus, improve comfort.
