Amalgam Filling Removal

Safe removal of your amalgam fillings in Greenville

The safe removal of amalgam fillings is important for both the guest and the dental staff. Without following proper protocol, harmful mercury vapors can be released during the process. In most cases, holistic dentists will not recommend removing your amalgam fillings unless there is good cause. However, if you find yourself in need of removal, the team at Palmer Distinctive Dentistry is specifically trained in the protocols set forth by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. In fact, Dr. Palmer is an accredited member of this organization and teaches the fundamentals of safe removal to other members.

Before seeking removal of amalgam fillings, you will want to make sure your dentist does the following:

  1. Keeps the filling cool – By keeping the temperature low through continuous water spray, the vapor released is kept at a minimum.
  2. Do not grind it down – Traditionally, fillings are removed by grinding it down, but this will release a cloud of mercury particles that can be inhaled into the lungs. Instead, the dentist will remove the filling by slicing it and pulling out larger chunks.
  3. Utilize high volume suction – Continuous suction can keep vapor and particulates contained. This should be left in place until the entire removal and cleaning process is complete.
  4. Rubber Dams – Rubber dams can help contain any debris collected during the removal process. In addition, a saliva ejector will help ensure that particulates are not swallowed. Once the fillings are completely out, the dam should be removed and the mouth should be thoroughly rinsed before placing new restorations.
  5. Protect the skin – Barriers should be used to keep skin and eyes protected from amalgam.
  6. Rubber Gloves – Non-latex gloves help prevent the transfer of particulates.
  7. Keep the breathing space clean – Even with the HVE system in place, keeping the breathing space contamination-free is vital.
  8. Supplemental air – By providing an outside air source, it eliminates the potential for breathing in vapors during removal.
