TMJ/Headache Therapy

Finding relief with your holistic TMJ dentist in Greenville

Our bodies contain many joints, but none quite as complex as those found in the jaws. The temporomandibular joints must not only hinge to open and close the jaw, but they must also slide to accommodate the chewing process. As the joint is intricate in its movements, the supporting muscles are unique as well.

Perhaps one of the most interesting things about TMJ disorder is that science has yet to link the condition to any specific cause. It is thought that ineffective orthodontic treatment may be one underlying factor, or stress caused by tooth grinding. No clear answers have yet been discovered, although we do know that women tend to develop issues with the joints of the jaw more frequently than men, bringing hormonal fluctuations into the equation. Moreover, not every person will experience TMJ disorder in the same way.

Of the list of possible symptoms, many most immediately consider clicking or popping to be primary. While some people with TMJ disorder do develop popping or clicking, millions of people whose jaw makes noise never experience issues with the joint. What you might look for in investigating whether or not you or a loved one has TMJ disorder includes:

  • Stiffness of the jaw muscle.
  • Pain that radiates in the jaw, face, or neck.
  • Limited range of motion in the jaw, or locking.
  • Pain when opening and closing the mouth.
  • Changes in the fit between upper and lower teeth.

There are a number of schools of thought surrounding the treatment of TMJ. Standard medical treatment may consist of muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatory medication, or pain relievers. Lifestyle changes may include stress reduction or the consumption of soft foods. The goal, however, needs to be the return of muscles and joints into their proper alignment.

Dental professionals typically treat TMJ disorder with a customized oral appliance, but Dr. Palmer goes above and beyond this basic method and treats the condition more comprehensively. Under the care of Dr. Palmer, you may experience relief from a combination of physical therapy modalities, rather than a single-minded approach.

The body is an entire working system, with all parts interconnected. In seeing the body this way, Dr. Palmer provides the kind of enhanced treatment that produces speedy and lasting results.
