Greenville, SC residents discover the difference between veneers and crowns

When it comes to anything in life, we enjoy having options. Dental care is no different. We want options to whiten, straighten, or restore our teeth. Porcelain crowns or veneers may be used to restore the teeth. How do we know which treatment is the right one for a winning smile? Dr. Palmer of Palmer Distinctive Dentistry in Greenville, SC offers dental restorations and chooses the most appropriate treatment for each guest’s needs.

Design and purpose

A dental crown is a cap used to restore a chipped or broken tooth. It may also cover a dental implant. Typically made of porcelain, the crown is a dental restoration that strengthens a weak or decayed tooth.

Veneers are thin porcelain shells that are bonded to the front of teeth. They can transform the appearance of discolored, chipped, or misaligned teeth. Minor improvement in shape or alignment are possible. Veneers are made of a thinner layer of porcelain as they only cover the front of teeth. Crowns cover the entire tooth. However, this thinness may make veneers more susceptible to fracturing.

Placement of the restoration

Before placing a dental restoration, the tooth must first be prepared. The damaged portion of the tooth must be treated before the tooth is shaped. With veneers, a thin layer of enamel about the thickness of a fingernail is removed to prepare for veneer placement. This is only done on the front of the tooth. The rest of the tooth remains untouched. Crowns are thicker and cover the entire tooth meaning more of the natural tooth is removed. Both restorations are matched to the adjacent teeth to ensure a natural-looking smile.

Bottom line

Crowns often prevent breaking or further damage. Veneers are more often used for cosmetic correction. Sometimes it is difficult to understand the difference between the two dental treatments. Regardless, the goal is to have a long-lasting, natural-looking solution. Trust Dr. Palmer to lead you in the best direction in restoring your smile.
