The importance of the dental materials chosen for our Greenville guests

For several years, there has been a debate about the safety of metals used in dental restorations, leaving millions of people uncertain as to which idea is right. Is there really a cause for alarm over silver mercury fillings (amalgams), when they have been used for well over half a century? What about other metal dental materials such as those used in crowns, bridges, and dental implants? We take special care to choose only non-metal dental materials in our Greenville office. Here are a few reasons why.

The mercury contained in many dental restorations, and the primary component of silver mercury fillings (amalgams), has been proven hazardous in many serious ways. Before the toxicity reaches a level where health is severely compromised, mercury will impact the immune system, a fact that is not discussed very often. By weakening the immune system, mercury impedes the body’s natural defense mechanisms. This highly toxic substance has also been shown to promote resistance to antibiotics, allowing harmful bacteria to impact health. No other substance except the antibiotics readily prescribed has the ability to create antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Ongoing research further implicates mercury in the infection process, specifically by encouraging bacteria and fungus, with some organisms easily accumulating heavy metals in the outer cell walls. Some of the organisms with this capability include amoebas, staphylococci, streptococci, and several species of Candida.

Ultimately, the body is not the place for metal of any kind. Studies conducted at the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden have shown that the human body has a tendency to become highly allergic to inserted metal, including fillings, almost immediately. Topping the list is mercury, composing 50 percent of amalgam fillings, then titanium, which is used in many types of dental implants, and then gold, dental materials many tout as biocompatible.

The effects of metal dental work clearly take place with more than just silver mercury fillings (amalgams). A combination of metals, such as the presence of fillings as well as dental crowns or bridges, or titanium implants, do not mix well with saliva or with one another, creating electromagnetic waves strong enough to be detected on an EEG. These man-made electrical impulses reach levels far greater than what is naturally produced by the brain, interfering with everything from emotions to motor skills.
