Biological Periodontal Therapy

Biological dentist in Greenville, SC uses laser therapy for the treatment of gum disease

Gum disease is a chronic condition that occurs when there is a buildup of bacteria on the teeth and gums. Once gum disease has progressed past gingivitis, the condition can no longer be improved through better at-home brushing and flossing. To keep the disease from spreading, it has to be controlled with the help of a dentist.

The traditional approach of many dentists is a procedure called scaling and root planing (SRP). This procedure removes the plaque, tartar, and bacteria from the tooth surface all the way down to the root, smoothing the root out so that the gum tissue can reattach to the tooth. In many cases, if this approach is unsuccessful the next step is often surgery.

At our office, we offer guests an alternative to surgery: laser gum therapy. This form of treatment involves removing the diseased gum tissue while dissolving the tartar and leaving the healthy gum tissue intact. An ultrasonic device is also used to break up and remove the buildup on the tooth root. This is followed by one more pass of the laser to eliminate any remaining traces of diseased tissue and sterilize the area. Once the entire process is complete, the soft tissue will be able to heal and grow back around the tooth.

With laser therapy, there is no cutting or stitching, which makes it an effective and fast healing approach to treating periodontal disease. Laser gum therapy is a good choice for guests in the following situations:

  • Those suffering with bone resorption or infection
  • Those with teeth that are already moving or shifting out of place
  • Those who have a fear of surgery
  • Those who have recurring infections
  • Those who have sensitive gums

Laser therapy is a biologic and holistic approach to treating gum disease. At Palmer Distinctive Dentistry, we believe in offering our guests effective, yet minimally invasive options to treat dental conditions and have their oral health restored.
