Biological Periodontal Therapy

Ozone therapy in our office near Greer treats oral conditions

Ozone is not typically a substance that people associate with their dentist, or even with their health. This is more a matter of pollution, isn’t it? Actually, ozone is a naturally occurring substance with a great many benefits to the environment and to our health. In fact, this tri-atomic particle of oxygen, in the hands of your skilled biological dentist, can do wonders.

In the clinical setting ozone is created in a machine that charges pure, medical grade oxygen. This substance may be used in gas or liquid form depending on the result we wish to achieve. The purpose of ozone is to bind to “bad” particles. Ozone therapy is used in the treatment of periodontal disease, as well as sterilizing the tooth after decay is removed, or after an extraction. In the air, ozone will bind to environmental pollutants in order to eliminate them, which is why it is used to measure pollution. In the body, ozone will do the same thing, bind to those molecules that are harmful to the body.

Ozone therapy may be used in our office near Greer for a variety of reasons:

  • Instead of using fluoride to strengthen enamel against oral bacteria, your dentist may apply ozone, which hardens the outer layer of teeth.
  • Periodontal therapy is a major area in which ozone is used to achieve excellent results. Ozonated water may be used to flush periodontal pockets, or ozone gas may be administered directly to diseased gum tissues. Within these tissues, ozone will destroy harmful, disease-causing bacteria and promote healing.
  • Cavities, like gum disease, are caused by oral bacteria. These living organisms eat and excrete, just like all living things. The waste of oral bacteria is toxic to our teeth, weakening enamel and soft tissues. When cavities are small, they may respond very well to ozone treatment, a filling will not be needed. When a cavity has become larger, ozone may be applied to the prepared tooth surface before a mercury-free filling is placed.

Ozone is extremely safe and highly effective for a variety of dental treatments. As a form of oxygen, ozone poses no concern with contraindications or allergic reactions.
